Nursing Modules 1 & 2 Reflection

Nursing Module 1: In module 1, I learned about the different types of learning styles, critical thinking, and clinical judgement, among other things. However, out of all the information I went over, the type of learner I was and the different learning strategies to help me study were the biggest take aways. I found out that I am a tactile learner and an auditory learner. This means that I need to touch the information and hear it out loud to best be able to understand the information. I found out that reading out loud to myself, listening to a voice recorder, making models or diagrams, and to take scheduled breaks when studying to be able to retain the information better. This will help my integration into the nursing culture by giving me ways to learn all of the information I will need to know as a nurse. It will help me become a more productive learner and a better nurse in the long run.

Module 2: In module 2, I learned about the ten concepts that make up the horizontal bars in the ATI Helix of success. The concepts that stood out to me were client-centered care, professionalism, and interdisciplinary collaboration. To me these are three of the most important parts of being a nurse and providing excellent care to your patients. If you are able to work with other disciplines, be professional with the client and staff, and make the client your focus, not their illness, then patients will receive great care every time. I believe this is what health care professionals lose after working in the field for too long. They start looking at patients and only see what is wrong with the patient. They don’t see the actual patient themselves. If the focus were to go back on the patients themselves, care would improve. This will help my integration into the nursing culture by reminding me to keep my focus on the client, be professional, and to work with other disciplines to help the patient receive the best care possible. I believe that the more I work on these traits, the more they will become a habit and harder to lose.

  1. Nice work John; knowing your learning style will be very helpful as you continue in this challenging program. It will also help you understand the best ways to teach patients and families.

  2. I am glad to see that some of this information in Module 1 was helpful for you and will help your learning in the future. Module 2 is foundational to providing care; some may lose the ability to see the individual, but many nurses work for years and never lose that ability to see the patient as an individual. Part of that depends on our own ability to understand what we want to contribute to the health of others and making sure we are in the condition to do so. Good work
