Career Development Reflection

When watching the movie NURSES: If Florence Could See Us Now, it made me feel more ready and more excited to become a practicing nurse. The stories from the different providers in the film really connected with me because of how I want to be able to connect with my patients, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to go into the nursing profession. Listening to the stories also showed me that I need to work on and harness my therapeutic communication skills, critical thinking, and abstract thinking skills for when I begin to practice. This is because many of the stories talked about how they connected to their patients by just talking to them, how they never knew what was going to happen, and how sometimes they had to think on their feet to fix something when they may not have had the proper parts or equipment available.

Watching the movie and the lectures provided to us about the job search and interview process, I know that I will prepare for the interview before going to it. I will do this by looking up the specific job requirements, the organization’s mission, come prepared with questions for the interviewer, and just be very honest and open with the person conducting the interview. I will describe my strengths by using examples of situations I have been in  from my clinical experience at UNE and my past medical experience as an EMT and phlebotomist. For example, I could say I am very focused, but people oriented and use the example of when I was taking care of a patient with dementia who would only do what I asked because I was the only one on the floor who took the time to sit and talk to him. I think this would show that I am there for my patients, but am also there to do what I have to to help my patients get better. On the other hand, I would address any challenges I have had, for example attending nursing school during a pandemic and not having much clinical experience in person. I would address this by saying that I have been using my EMT license to gain experience communicating with patients or by following around the nurse I am assigned during clinical to every patient they have, not just the ones I am assigned. This would show that I am driven, will use the resources and tools I have available, and that I am willing to learn so that I can improve myself and my skills.

  1. John, emphasizing how you’ve overcome the pandemic-related challenges to your nursing education with persistence and creativity is a great strategy – these are qualities a prospective employer will be looking for.
