Attaining and Protecting Your Professional Nursing License Reflection

After completing this program and passing the  NCLEX to obtain my license, I plan on becoming licensed in Maine and staying in Maine to practice. However, Maine is a compact state with the nursing licensure, so I wanted to leave to work in another compact state I would be able to. To apply for my license, I am able to apply for web-based applications. I need to have my official transcript and have it signed off by the director of the program. This process will also require a criminal background check and fingerprinting on the initial licence. I need to go about this by going to the state of Maine website and following a link to a website where I will have to follow the instructions to receive the background check.

During this semester, we were able to watch presentations from the Attorney General’s Office and the Medical Professionals Health Program. During this we learned about the provisions for impaired nurses in Maine that say we are required to report any suspected impairment, the discipline will follow the facilities policies, and there is a chance for recovery, depending on the severity of the offense. During my nursing practice, I may encounter common legal issues that impact nursing practice and I will need to protect myself from this. To do so, I will make sure that I obtain practice insurance or make sure that the facility I work for has practice insurance and a lawyer that can represent me if I ever get into any legal trouble. However, I will make sure that I do my best to prevent any legal issues by protecting my patients rights, always following the proper policies, and making sure that I ask someone if I am not sure what to do in a certain situation that could be potentially problematic.

  1. To apply for licensure by examination in Maine, you do NOT need official transcripts as you are graduating from a Maine program.
